GiovanBattista Piranesi (Mogliano Veneto 1720 - Rome 1778) "Collection of some drawings by Barberi da Cento called il Guercino" Original etching and manner of lavis signed in the plate on the bottom left "Piranesi In.", From the "Collection of some drawings by Barberi da Cento known as Guercino, engraved in copper, and presented to the singular merit of Mr. Tommaso Jenkins painter, and Academician of S. Luca, in an act of respect and friendship by the architect and his co-academician: Gio. Battista Piranesi. ”, Work published in Rome by the publisher Giovanni Generoso Salomoni in 1764. Beautiful copy in the first edition, without the number 2 in the upper right corner, printed with a magnificent two-color inking and a strong" lavis "effect of the background on laid paper bearing the watermark "Lily in a single circle above the letter F with Heart and letters AMGS and Cross" similar to Robison 21 and Heawood 1572, attributable to Roman paper production of the XVIII Century and typical of the contemporary runs of Piranesian works, with large margins beyond the imprint of the plate, slightly burnished and with various areas of small foxing points at the edges, but overall in excellent general condition. The composition, invented by Piranesi himself, reproduces in the upper part a drawing by Guercino which is said to have been part of the collections of the famous Roman restorer and sculptor Bartolomeo Cavaceppi (Rome 1715 or 17-1799). Bibliography: Bettagno “Piranesi. Engravings, branches, bindings, architectures ”Vicenza 1978 pages 53-55 and figure 306.
